Rhode Island Welcomes the Newly Named ISM- Greater RI

Pawtucket, R.I., August 2010 – On August 18, 2010 the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) Board of Directors approved a name change for the former Purchasing Management Association of Rhode Island (PMARI). The board of directors for the newly named Institute for Supply Management- Greater Rhode Island felt that changing the name was key to insuring future growth. With the global recognition of the ISM name, board members and chapter members felt that the organization would have a better brand recognition then under the old name.

PMARI was originally founded in 1922 and affiliated with the then National Association of Purchasing Management. It was incorporated in the state of Rhode Island in 1924. As industry and business changed from individual job functions like purchasing, transportation, warehousing and inventory control of individual manufacturers and suppliers to managing the entire supply chain the NAPM migrated to a more educational and professional development organization serving the entire supply chain. In recognition of these changes the NAPM changed their name to the Institute for Supply Management in 2000 and now the greater Rhode Island affiliate has followed suit in both name and the people that they serve.

Why join ISM- Greater RI? Along with becoming a member of the Rhode Island chapter of ISM, members are automatically enrolled as members in the global ISM organization. Members have access to industry articles and magazines, industry job postings, highly interactive educational programs and discounts on national seminars. Local chapter members are invited to seven no cost dinner meetings for networking and educational lectures from speakers in related industry fields. Members also earn continuing education units (CEU) credits for attending dinner meetings.

Some areas of special interested that ISM focused on are distribution, purchasing, inventory control, product/service development, investment recovery/disposition, quality control, logistics, manufacturing, strategic sourcing, materials management, transportation, packaging and warehousing.
